Cocotoo
To successfully transform a huge railway arch into a popular Italian restaurant you need gusto and vision. Fortunately, the friendly people behind Manchester’s Cocotoo have plenty of both. What’s most distinctive about this wonderfully over-the-top venue is its beautiful arched ceilings – colourful domes are painted with spectacular replicas of Sistine Chapel frescoes. Twinkly lights, a happy crowd and water features contribute further to a memorable night out. Reliably fresh pasta, pizzas and well-made Italian classics are prepared in full view in an open kitchen. Cocotoo is very much a stalwart of the city’s thriving restaurant scene, great for pre-theatre suppers if you're visiting the nearby Palace, and a favourite venue for showbiz parties.

Stock
This classy restaurant is widely recognised as one of Manchester’s best Italians. It occupies the fine Old Stock Exchange building whose magnificent 50-foot domed ceiling and original marble features create instant atmosphere. Sophisticated and relatively expensive, it’s cheaper at lunchtime when there are good fixed-price menus. Stock’s food reflects the best of southern Italian cooking – hearty, inventive and full of robust flavours. A starter of thinly-sliced two-month-aged boned rolled shoulder of pork served with buffalo mozzarella and spiced olives is a delicious example. Another is veal loin steak on a bed of spinach with gorgonzola and cream, perfectly matched with your pick from the award-winning wine list. Jazz duos, trios and quartets play to an appreciative audience on Friday nights from 8pm.

A welcome addition to Manchester’s Canal Street, Villaggio opened its doors in June 2005. This Italian restaurant is spread over two floors, with the contemporary decor enhanced by stylish lighting, exposed brickwork and polished wooden floors. The menu at Villaggio is extensive and great value for money, with the modern Italian cuisine freshly prepared in-house. The Express Menu (12-5pm) and Set Menu (12-7pm) offer especially good deals. Our favourite dishes include the Polpette con Pomodoro – homemade meatballs with a garlic, oregano tomato sauce; and the Tortellini Quattro Formaggio – ricotta spinach tortellini, with mozzarella, gorgonzola, parmesan, dolcelatte cheese, and cream.

Zizzi
Italian restaurant chain Zizzi opened the doors of its very first branch in London's Chiswick in 1999. Now there are over 100 branches, all decorated in an appealing contemporary style. Wood-fired ovens, open kitchens and modern interior design with locally influenced art features make for a vibrant atmosphere. As for the food, they serve up a variety of traditional Italian dishes including all the usual suspects: salads, antipasti, pasta, pizza, calzone, risotto as well as fish and meat mains and desserts. What Zizzi really pride themselves on is sourcing good quality ingredients; salads are dressed with white balsamic vinegar from Modena, for example, and offer Goddess Olives, a variety known for their firm flesh and nutty flavour. The modestly priced wine list is dominated by Italian wines, starting at £13.45 for a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo. Didsbury's Zizzi is housed in a beautiful old building - one of the original Didsbury Dozen pubs, and has been renovated accordingly. Customers can also enjoy a large outdoor dining area in the summer months.
